Since using the SEO plugin for FireFox has already been discussed I’ll just touch briefly on this.
In a nutshell…
Study your competitors back links, check them for quality and niche relevance then get some back links for yourself. Strive for links on web2.0 type platforms.
No follow links aren’t as good as regular links, but they are still worth your time particularly for Yahoo.
In yahoo or most search engines use this search string to identify links:
link: www.domainyourchecking.com
Use this string ot identify links and exclude internal links to the domain your checking:
link: www.domainyourchecking.com – www.domainyourchecking.com
Blogs & Forums

You can look for likely web2.0 platforms to leave comments (quality comments) on blogs etc.
Using Google search use these phrases:
site: squidoo.com “sign my guest book” your keyword phrases
site: hubpages.com “submit a comment” your keyword phrases
